Afraid to take the Sako. Bear hunting is hard on guns
I took my Ruger No. 1 .450 Bushmaster. Because it is all Cerakote. Man what a gun.

It’s one thing to shot the Bear. But another to get him out of the Bush.

Waterwolf No Bear. Even though in my mind I hyped myself up that I would. But Bear hunters are a different Breed. I don’t believe I’ve evolved yet.

Like any other animal, it all depends on what they have been eating. Carrion and fish do not make for good meat. On the other hand a good healthy bear provides an abundant amount of super good cooking and baking oil if the meat is properly rendered. The oil is also excellent for waterproofing leather. I never have eaten bear meat because of the possibility of Trichinosis, but some folks find it to be great table fare. Sakojim.

Shot a black bear in 1982, and it did not smell. My family and I ate every bit of it and enjoyed it. Only issue was getting it down the mountain after dressing it, almost got run over by it tumbling after me, they don't drag like a deer. Had been Archery hunting in Cameron County Pa earlier in the year and saw 6 different bear so decided to return for bear season and lucked out the first morning in the pouring rain. First and only time I hunted them, had a rug made that the wife used to take to nursery school along with moose antlers etc to show the kids. They got a kick out of it.

I got a black bear in 95 and I had the hams smoked.
They were excellent and reminded me of corned beef.
Bear like pork can carry trichinosis so you just have to cook it long enough and hot enough.
Being from the Adirondacks it had been fed on beech nuts and made fine dining.
The hide is luxurious and surprisingly soft.
I’m not sure if I would shoot another one though as it was a huge effort to get him out and in a funny sort of way he reminded me of some of my friends!

Marinated most of the meat before eating. But also had hamburger and made Jerky. Don't know about the stomach and worms. Didn'the have an issue. Did have several oriental people approach me at the check station wanting me to show them where I dressed it and they would pay me, they wanted the gall, but it is illegal you sell any part of an animal in Pa so I declined. Actually there was no snow just a lot of rain.

Bear meat is great and no danger if you cook it well. Just get the meat cooled as soon as possible, which means field dressing if you can. Also means that you have to have plenty of ice in camp or a refrigerator nearby. You can hang it to cool down if it's cold, but in grizzly territory, that's probably asking for trouble!

I'm trying to attach a bear ham recipe here, I also have another recipe made up for cubed steak chunks, possibly the sweetest meat you can ever have, clean and lean. If you want it, just ask.

This was taken with a .375 H&H Sako AV.
