    Hi there,

I'm the latest owner of a very nice Sako L61R in .30-06. I've been lurking on threads here reading up on how to solve the dreaded Sako dovetail windage problem, and I'm at a bit of an impasse, so I figured I'd register. I don't want to clutter up the site, so should I post a question in an existing thread, or start a new one?

    Cheers,

    -Grem

    Hello Grem.
Welcome to the club. Having owned a few Sakos over the years I am always interested in problems others have with them. First off, I have never experienced a problem with windage centering of the Sako dovetails when mounting a properly chosen scope to match the action length. Some of the older model Sako mounts do have windage adjustment screws. I believe that if non adjustable mounts are used that the front mount base should be placed vertically flush with the opening of the chamber. The rear Sako mounts have a central pin that serves a very important purpose. It is there to re position the scope mounts to the exact same position of zero if removed and carefully reinstalled. Many owners have trouble because they are mounting a scope that is not the matching tube length for the mount proper front or rear base placement. If you mount the base forward to accommodate a long tube scope, the windage adjustment may go too far to the left and vice versa too far right by mounting too far back from proper position. Any alteration to the mounting position of the rear base will also effect the windage adjustment. There are older Sako mounts that were made for shorter and longer scope tubes but most are too difficult find. Others will also have helpful information I am sure. Sakojim.

Probably best to post your question on a new thread; that way things don't get tangled up. Be specific as to what rings you're using. If anything is unclear, you can post a photo. You may also wish to run a search or scroll through the "Tips and Tricks" forum, as there's quite a bit of information about scope mounting there. We will be happy to help you if you need it.
