• Hey All! Lately there has been more and more scammers on the forum board. They register and replies to members requests for guns and/or parts or other things. The reply contains a gmail or hotmail address or similar ”anonymous” email addresses which they want you to reply to. DO NOT ANSWER ANY STRANGE MESSAGES! They often state something like this: ”Hello! Saw your post about purchasing a stock for a Safari. KnuckleheadBob has one. Email him at: [email protected]” If you receive any strange messages: Check the status of whoever message you. If they have no posts and signed up the same day or very recently, stay away. Same goes for other members they might refer to. Check them too and if they are long standing members, PM them and ask if the message is legit. Most likely it’s not. Then use the report function in each message or post so I can kick them out! Beware of anything that might seem fishy! And again, for all of you who registered your personal name as username, please contact me so I can change it to a more anonymous username. You’d be surprised of how much one can find out about a person from just a username on a forum such ad our! All the best! And be safe! Jim

I’m new here as I recently inherited from my father in law a Sako that I believe is an L 46? It is chambered in 222 Remington. Looking forward to learning more about the history of this rifle. I have shot it many times in the past hunting prarie dogs. It is very accurate. I attached some pictures. Any help identifying would be appreciated. Thank you

Welcome aboard. You are correct you have a nice L46 rifle. If interested in obtaining date of manufacture you can click on the Factory Records Service at the top center of this page to request info.

It appears to me that you have a factory L46 stock to which someone has skillfully added a raised cheekpiece. This is understandable since the L46 had a rather low stock and the large target scope is mounted fairly high. I'm yet to meet an inaccurate Sako .222 of any vintage.

I dunno - looks more like a custom stock to me. If it's a modified original, that is absolutely the best wood I have ever seen on a standard grade L46. The dark reddish color is highly atypical. I'd like to see more pictures to be sure - especially a well-lit closeup of the left side of the buttstock and an upward-looking shot of the forend, showing the checkering.

I was going by the checkering pattern, which appears factory for the L46. If not factory, then it is a very close duplicate of factory checkering. The forearm shape is also identical to the factory L46 stock. If I am correct about the comb being added, then the stock would have been refinished at that time, so a deeper red stain could certainly have been used. But I agree that we need more and better photos to make a more accurate call.

All true. I agree about the checkering. The only way to know is to see some close-up photos.

Ok I got a chance to get some new pics. After further inspection I think Stonecreek maybe right about the rise. Let me me know your thoughts. 91720FF0-95BA-4857-83BF-DB3C4A0F7187.jpeg 77BE2666-B91F-4F6A-8CB8-1141B5E066B7.jpeg 205F9937-9223-4EE9-9661-6D86D7C37E4E.jpeg FA3C9D00-A851-4DB1-9F99-F41076012630.jpeg

I agree. There's definitely a joint there, and the shape looks more like an add-on than a custom stock. The splice and blend are very well executed. And the checkering is either original Sako or a perfect copy.
