I have had a great time shooting my new 1952 Sako L46 .222 rem.

Unfortunately, when I was cleaning the rifle last time, I accidentally flipped the safety on the bolt while it was out of the rifle and now I cannot get the bolt to slide back into the receiver.
I do t want to force it and wonder what I have to do to release the safety on the bolt

It has nothing to do with the safety. What you did was "uncock" it. It has to be in the cocked position to go back in the receiver.

Put the cocking piece in a padded vise (or something similar which will hold it without scarring) and rotate the bolt 90 degrees to the cocked position.

You can also use a screw driver if a vise is not available, PAD the bit, turn the bolt over, and push then turn the bolt, It SHOULD hold after about 20 degrees, then just continue to 90 degrees, Sort of a "you got to hold your tongue just right" move, Padded vise is best, Pull the bolt to cock then move the handle down.
